Re:        Retiree Banquet/Benevolent Fund/General Update

Dear Retirees:

Since our last update as of December 2006 we have lost the following firefighters:

Name Date Deceased Benevolent Fund? Spouse or Survivor?
Keith L. Wampler (33) 2/18/07 Yes N/A
Guillermo (Benny) Balderrama (32) 3/2/07 Yes N/A
Odell W. Jantzen (78) 3/14/07 No Yes/Nora

Mr. Wampler and Balderrama were active firefighters with 8 and 4 years of service in the department respectively. We are told you can send your benevolent fund payments to the Union Office: Local 975, 7537 Cameron Rd., Austin, TX 78752. Please contact Eric Pederson on his cell phone at (512) 922-4332 with any benevolent fund questions you may have.

It was decided not to proceed with a pension bill in the legislature this year. The bill was to have wording for additional pension contributions to be made into the pension fund by the City of Austin. Although some progress was made, we did not have the necessary support from the City Manager along with a key city council member to get this done. Efforts will continue to work on an increase in contributions from the City of Austin and, if successful, the Board will implement this immediately and make any necessary pension statute changes in the following legislature.

Mark your calendars! Enclosed is an invitation to the retirees' BBQ to be held Tuesday, May 15th at 6:00 pm. The banquet will be held at Fiesta Gardens again this year. If you have the opportunity, please join us for what promises to be a fun time!

Want to be on an e-mail buddy list? If you would like to be an e-mail contact (buddy) who we can send a quick e-mail to and help get word out to others about fellow retirees passing away and other important matters, please contact our office. Our e-mail address is: afdpension@austin.rr.com. should you be interested. Our website address is AFRS.ORG, which can be read for updates as well. And don't forget about our retiree breakfast group which meets the second Wednesday between 8:30-9:00am each month at the Waterloo Ice House located at 38th and Medical Parkway, just off Lamar across from Seton Hospital.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let us know.

Sincerely,

William E. Stefka
