Re:        COLA Information/Election Runoff Results/Retiree Update

Dear Retirees:

At the December board meeting, our actuary said we would not be able to approve a COLA for 2007. The pension board wants everyone to know that we are going to the legislature with a bill that has a provision for the City of Austin to increase their pension contributions into our pension fund which, if passed, will help make COLA's more affordable for our retirees. There will also be a provision which changes the COLA language which should also help in making COLA's more attainable. Efforts continue to get the City of Austin to support our cause and we will need your help as well to get this bill passed. Working together we can get this done. The bill has not been filed yet so there is no number assigned, but we will keep you posted so that you can let your City Council know how important this bill is to our membership.

Our trustee election runoff process is now complete and the results are as follows:

Mike Sullivan
Richard Thompson

Congratulations to Mike Sullivan on another 3 year term on our pension board! The pension board trustees would also like to thank Richard Thompson and Ken Cox who agreed to run for this position; as well as the entire membership who took part in this election and runoff process.

If you would like to be an e-mail contact (buddy) who we can send a quick e-mail to and help get word out to others about fellow retirees passing away and other important matters, please contact our office. Our e-mail address is: should you be interested. Our website address is AFRS.ORG, which can be read for updates as well.

Our Local 975 has asked any retirees who a few years ago may have made payments by check to or through the Union for supplemental life insurance, rather than through payroll deductions, that they please contact their Local 975 offices at (512) 441-7572.

Don't forget about our retiree breakfast group which meets the second Wednesday of each month at the Waterloo Ice House. They now start a little later, between 8:30-9:00am, due to traffic, etc. This is the Waterloo Ice House located at 38th and Medical Parkway, across from Seton Hospital, just off Lamar. Please make this event if you get a chance as it is a great way to get together with your fellow retirees.

We hope you have a safe and Happy Holiday Season! If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let us know.
